For more than 25 years, researchers at Northwestern Medicine have studied a rare group of people they call "SuperAgers," people 80 and older whose memory performance rivals adults three decades younger. Researchers have identified two distinct protective patterns: some SuperAgers show resistance, they simply don't develop the plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer's pathology. Others show resilience, they do develop that pathology, but it doesn't translate into cognitive decline the way it typically does.
The Surprising Part: Diet and Exercise Habits Varied Widely
Given how much attention diet and exercise get in brain health research, this finding stands out: among SuperAgers studied, diet and exercise habits varied considerably from person to person. Some exercised regularly, some didn't. Some ate diets that would fit neatly into MIND diet recommendations, others didn't particularly. Neither showed up as the consistent, defining trait across the group.
The One Trait They Actually Shared: Strong Social Connection
What SuperAgers did consistently have in common was strong social connection, maintaining close relationships and staying socially engaged throughout life. This lines up directly with separate dementia risk research showing social isolation is associated with meaningfully higher dementia risk, and suggests the relationship runs both ways: social connection isn't just protective against decline, it may be one of the more defining features of exceptional cognitive aging specifically.
